The oil spillage resulting from corrosion to the pipeline on North Slope Alaska is a good example of conflicting short term demands on wilderness environments. Opponents (of oil exploration) warn oil exploration will harm a pristine wilderness and endanger a key habitat for migratory birds, polar bears, caribou and other animals.
