A comprehensive range of case studies

We have considered the range of the generalisation & that demand for wilderness lands can be categorised as social, economic & environmental. This in itself demands a number of examples. We have considered wilderness as the home to indigenous people (Clayoquot Sound, Uluru, Kakadu & Korup). These are all small scale examples & with the exception of Korup there is no major conflict in demand for land with environmental need. In Uluru there is a conflict with tourism which could be classified as both social (the desire for the experience) or economic ($$$$). The hunt for resources within wilderness areas can be ex amplified on a range of scales in Alaska, with specific reference to mineral extraction, conflicting with conservation. Logging in Clayoquot Sound is smaller scale but can be expanded to logging in western canada & creates conflict with indigenous people, tourism & conservation. This can be compared & contrasted with e..g Korup within a tropical rainforest biome. Antarctica is the only large scale example & demand comes from scientists (not necessarily conservation), tourism, mineral extraction & of course conservation. A key area to consider is the growing demand for farmland & its impact on wilderness areas & we have given it little thought so far. Please come prepared to discuss this tomorrow.

Could you all consider posting on some of the core case studies that you have all studied. First up gets an open choice! No repetition please!
