People & the future of Ecosystem Management

To tie up this bit.... We have studied the two key questions for this section: How are individuals and organisations playing a part in ecosystem managaement? & What is the future for global ecosystems?

Remember: National & Local initiatives such as Agenda 21 ... waste recycling for example, Non-governmental organisations, Conservation & conflict -needs 2 case studies, Strategic thinking (UNEP, Rio Earth Summit etc). Biodiversity hotspots is a bit of an 'IN' topic & come under this heading.

Thinking about the future of ecosystems an 'ecosystem well being' index has been constructed. This summary of the Millenium Ecosystem assessment produced by Green Facts is really interesting & worth a look at.

Further thoughts: Do you know Brundtland's definition of sustainability?

"Meeting the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs." Brundtland-1987

Before we move onto the population section of the unit I think it is going to be worth spending a couple of lessons looking at the key themes for Unit 4. Understanding of these cross-unit themes are essential for tacking section c) & should help you make connections as you go along. They are: Sustainability, Conservation v Development, Enviromental Degradation & destruction, Poverty & Globalisation.
